Notes: Gallery August West is excited to present this original Edwardian Ball handbill promoting 1966 Jefferson Airplane show. This particular example is signed by Stanley Mouse, who has also added his distinctive hand-drawn cartoon mouse sketch - a playful personal mark that has become highly sought after by collectors of Mouse’s work.

One of the classic images from the early San Francisco psychedelic poster movement, this striking design by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley is known simply as the “Edwardian Ball.” Created to promote a special event held November 6, 1966 at the Fillmore Auditorium, the concert served as the Homecoming celebration for the Associated Students of San Francisco State College, featuring Jefferson Airplane at the height of the city’s rapidly evolving music scene.

The composition centers on a sharply dressed Edwardian gentleman in top hat and cape, cane in hand, rendered in the bold graphic style that would soon define the Mouse and Kelley partnership. Surrounding the figure, flowing psychedelic lettering announces the event while colorful ornamental patterns add visual rhythm and movement to the design.

Original printings of this piece are notoriously scarce. According to the San Francisco State student activities manager who commissioned Mouse to design the poster, the entire first printing poster consisted of only 250 pieces. As a result, authentic originals surface only occasionally, while many examples seen on the market today are later printings.

Today the “Edwardian Ball” stands as one of the most recognizable and historically significant images from the formative years of San Francisco’s psychedelic poster era - an elegant fusion of Victorian imagery and the emerging visual language of the 1960s counterculture.
