Notes: Gallery August West is excited to present this original 1973 concert handbill featuring Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage, produced during one of the most myth-laden moments of Bay Area counterculture history. The show was officially billed as a “Legal Aid Benefit,” but insiders and historians have long acknowledged that the event was in reality the Hells Angels’ private party on 10/2/1973. At the time, Sonny Barger and the Hells Angels were facing legal trouble, and it was allegedly decided by Bill Graham and the Angels that reframing the event publicly as a legal benefit was the wisest move. The result is a handbill that exists at the intersection of Grateful Dead lore, outlaw biker history, and San Francisco music mythology.
